A few years ago after I got back from Europe I thought I had seen the creme de la creme of scenery. We had been on a remarkable drive through the hills in Germany on our way to Austria, and I almost lost my sh*t in front of 52 borderline strangers when around the corner I saw piercing blue sunny skies with the tallest snow capped mountains in the distance and a turquoise lake leading it’s way up into the hills. It was at that point that I realised there truly was heaven on earth.
In the years that I have been travelling it is almost guaranteed that if there is a place you would expect me not to like I’ll do the opposite and fall in love with it. Take my first trip overseas, India. Never in a million years would I have expected to even go there, let alone love it. The same thing happened with Singapore. I was barely excited about the trip, but it turned out to be one of my favourite places in the world!! You can read about it here if you want to see pictures of me having the time of my life.
Here we are, another year has passed and as usual I’m late to the party with my goals. It’s not that I haven’t had any, in fact I’ve had 2017 goals since like October. That’s how eager I was for 2016 to wrap up. It’s not that anything bad happened in 2016, in fact it was the opposite. I’m just a sucker for a good ‘new year, new me’ situation.
I am living proof that hanging on to first impressions isn’t always the best idea. When I first travelled to San Francisco in 2012 as part of a Contiki tour it didn’t do much for me. I have strong memories of drinking too much, seeing lots of homeless people, and staying in a supposedly haunted hotel. For a tour company with a slogan of NO Regrets, I certainly had a lot. I felt like I had completely missed the point of San Francisco.
