Happy Birthday to Me: Turning 31

The 31st was my 31st Birthday.  Yup.. 31.. on the 31st!! I can’t believe it myself.  Its scary how the years go so quickly when you get older, not that turning 31 is old (I hope).  It feels like only yesterday I was celebrating my 30th birthday in the most mature way possible with a trip to Harry Potter World in Orlando.  This year was a little bit more sedate but I still had a great day.

The day started with Jerome taking me out for breakfast at Lansdowne Cafe where I had the most delicious crumble pot.  I picked the spot because I had amazing pancakes there last time (you can read about it here) but they’ve since changed their menu so their pancake toppings didn’t appeal to me.  Blessing in disguise really because I would never have picked the crumble otherwise.  The berries and apple were covered in toasted oats with a golden syrup glaze and a side of yoghurt.  OOOH, it was soooo good!!!!!

After breakfast Jerome and I went to Bunnings to pick up the Birthday gift he got for me.  Earlier in the day Jerome had surprised me with a wrapped bunch of veggie seedlings to plant and it was the most romantic thing ever!  So off we went to Bunnings to collect my very own raised garden bed to turn into a veggie patch!!!  For those not from Australia, Bunnings is a huge hardware store.  I just heard today that they’re about to open in the UK which will be way more exciting for Aussie expats than anyone else.

The thing is with birthdays when you get older is that you realise how different you have become from your younger self.  Never in a million years would I think a trip to Bunnings would be the ideal place to spend my birthday, but 31 year old me absolutely loved it!!  You’ll notice in the picture our dog, Sonic has already made his mark all along the dirt.  That will be the first and only time he’ll be able to enjoy himself in the veggie patch.

After all of the excitement of getting a veggie patch we decided to head to our local cafe called Whisk and Co.  If you’re ever in Hobart you have to go there.  They are amazing!!  Despite still being full from breakfast 31 year old me had to indulge and have an iced chocolate.

In the evening we had Mum, Dad, my sisters and their dog Jasper come over for a BBQ.  Just writing that has made me realise what an Aussie Birthday I’ve had.  Bunnings AND a BBQ dinner?!  Talk about #AustralianSummer.

As well as the garden bed I got some great gifts from the rest of the family including money to go towards the grandma style recliner chair that I bought for myself which will be delivered in a couple of weeks.  See what I mean, another crazy gift that I would never have thought I would buy.  Who on earth buys themselves a recliner chair?  31 year old me, that’s who!

Mum and Dad also got me some flowers, a cake and a cute little chocolate box that makes the chocolate look like little butterflies and bees.

And finally, in what appears to be an unexpected birthday theme this year, my sisters bought me a mandarin plant and some salted caramel sauce to put on ice cream.  To be honest, I really couldn’t tell you which one I am more excited about.

It was such a lovely day that I wish all days could be like that.  Even though I have mixed feelings about turning 31 and officially being well and truly into my 30’s now, things could be a hell of a lot worse.  I didn’t wake up with a hangover like 18 year old me definitely did, and I love that my gifts are things that I can keep and will hopefully last a long time.  This adulating thing isn’t too bad after all.
